From May 5 to 8, the 9th Forum for Young Scholars in Biochemical Engineering, the 15th Symposium on Biochemical Engineering Technology Innovation and Industrial Development, and the 1st Shaanxi Bio-Manufacturing Industry Innovation Conference were grandly held in Xi’an. With the theme of “Synthetic Biology Underpins the Future, Green Intelligent Manufacturing Restructures Industry”, the conference was hosted by the Biochemical Engineering Committee of the Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China, undertaken by Shaanxi Normal University and Northwest University, and co-organized by institutions including the Shaanxi Synthetic Biology Innovation Center. During the conference, as a co-organizer, the center was invited to set up a special booth at the main venue, fully displaying its construction progress, R&D platform system, and the latest marketization progress of self-developed molecular enzymes and a series of reagent products.
I. Conference Overview: High-Level Event Focusing on the Transformation of Synthetic Biology Industry
Targeting the national strategic demands of the 15th Five-Year Plan period, this conference aims to gather outstanding young scholars and industry experts in the field to conduct in-depth discussions on key directions such as cutting-edge synthetic biology technologies, green bio-manufacturing processes, bio-based materials and chemicals, and intelligent bio-manufacturing. Academicians Tan Tianwei, Fang Yu and Fan Daiyi from the Chinese Academy of Engineering served as conference chairs. Nearly a hundred top experts and scholars including multiple academicians delivered conference reports, keynote speeches and invited presentations, comprehensively demonstrating the latest research progress and industrial development directions of biochemical engineering and synthetic biology in China.
The conference featured an opening ceremony, conference presentations, a graduate student forum, a working meeting of the Biochemical Engineering Committee, seven sub-forums (including Synthetic Biology and Cell Factories, Bio-Manufacturing and Biomass Chemical Engineering, Future Food and Nutritional Health, Natural Products and Biomedicine, Bionic Synthesis and Frontier Applications, Fine Chemicals and Biotransformation, Biochemical Processes and Intelligent Equipment), as well as a closing ceremony. It is committed to building a high-level platform for industry-university-research exchanges, promoting the deep integration of innovation chains and industrial chains, driving industrial transformation through original innovation, and injecting new momentum into the high-quality development of China’s bioeconomy.
II. Co-Organization and Exhibition: Full Display of the Center’s Construction Achievements
As one of the co-organizers of this conference, the Shaanxi Synthetic Biology Innovation Center deeply participated in the conference organization and academic exchanges. A special booth was set up at the main venue to comprehensively showcase the center’s construction progress, R&D platform system and industrialization achievements.
Combining graphic display boards and physical products, the booth systematically presented the center’s strategic positioning, platform layout, technical achievements and future plans, attracting many attending experts and scholars to stop by for visits and exchanges.

Aiming to “lead the high-quality development of the bio-manufacturing industry”, the center focuses on independent innovation, collaborative innovation and industry-finance integration to fully advance the industrialization of research achievements. At present, the center has built two major R&D platforms in Xi’an and Yangling, covering a total area of more than 4,000 square meters, equipped with 150 sets of lab-scale equipment and 2 production lines, forming a complete chain from basic research to industrial application.
III. Conference Interaction: In-depth Dialogues with Academicians and Experts
During the conference, the center’s exhibition team held in-depth exchanges with many academicians and experts visiting the booth. Discussions covered cutting-edge trends in synthetic biology, key technological breakthroughs in enzyme engineering, and paths for industry-university-research collaborative innovation. Multiple consensus were reached on joint research of key technologies, co-construction of innovation platforms, and joint training of high-level talents in the future.
The attending academicians and experts spoke highly of the center’s full-chain platform layout and marketed product portfolio. They commented that the center has blazed a distinctive development path of “enterprise-oriented, market-driven and deeply integrated industry-university-research collaboration”, setting a good example for the industrial translation of synthetic biology technologies from laboratory to market in China.
IV. Future Outlook: Synthetic Biology Underpins the Future
Currently, a new round of global scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is accelerating. As a disruptive frontier technology, synthetic biology is profoundly reshaping traditional production modes and providing underlying support to break resource and energy bottlenecks and achieve carbon neutrality goals. As a core representative of new-quality productive forces, bio-manufacturing has become a strategic highland for scientific and technological competition among major countries.
Taking this conference as a new starting point, the Shaanxi Synthetic Biology Innovation Center will continue to uphold the goal of “leading the high-quality development of the bio-manufacturing industry”. With independent innovation, collaborative innovation and industry-finance integration as its approaches, the center will continuously promote the industrial application of synthetic biology technologies. In the future, the center will keep enriching and upgrading the Zymagen series of molecular enzymes and supporting reagent product portfolio, contribute to the high-quality development of China’s bioeconomy and the leading position of Shaanxi’s synthetic biology industry nationwide, and inject strong “synthetic biology momentum” into a “green, low-carbon and sustainable” industrial future.
Although the conference has concluded, the center’s dialogue with top players in synthetic biology across China and the world has only just begun. From R&D platforms to marketed products, from Xi’an to the national market, the Shaanxi Synthetic Biology Innovation Center is taking solid steps to write a brand-new chapter in the industrialization of synthetic biology technologies.
